NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- As school districts across the country open their doors to students, or prepare to do so like New York City, comes an alarming new report.

More than 97,000 kids tested positive for coronavirus during the last two weeks of July, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, CBS News reported. That figure covers July 16 to July 30.

Twenty-five children died from COVID-19 in July.

More than 338,000 of the reported 5 million U.S. COVID-19 cases were children.

The reports comes as NYC Mayor de Blasio announced that the city will return to in-person learning in the fall, but not without a slew of safety protocols in place.

De Blasio said at his briefing Friday that school officials have "looked at examples from all over the world of what will keep the school community safe, and they've made a series of choices of how to do things from the health and safety lens first, while also making sure we can educate our kids."

Parents and guardians had until Friday night to register students for in-person, remote or hybrid learning.
